Frequently Asked Questions:

General

Every faculty or graduate student should have a Unix account on the Statistics department Unix server. You account username will be your first initial plus the first seven characters of your last name. If you are taking statistics courses which require you to use server applications, then you may apply for a Unix account . Once you have an account, it will not expire unless this requirement is made by the instructor. Your Unix account may also be used for departmental e-mail. Your e-mail address will be your " username @stat.wvu.edu". You should change your account password the first time you login to the Unix server.

How do I obtain a Unix account?

If you are a new graduate student, please email Jun Tan to request a new account.

If you are a student in a statistics course and need a Unix account to run server applications, please submit a request to your instructor(s) for a Unix account. Your request will forward to system staff shortly thereafter. Please print your first name, last name and course number (e.g. stat221) on your request form.

How do I change my password?

Here are the steps to change your password, please contact Steve Giessler (steve.giessler@mail.wvu.edu) or Jun Tan (jtan@stat.wvu.edu) if you have trouble.

1. Using SSH , connect to stat.wvu.edu and login.

2. From the prompt, enter the command "passwd" (without quotes).

3. You will be prompted for your old password, and then twice for your new password.

4. At this point, your password will have been changed, and you may log off.

How do I read my departmental e-mail?

Your Unix account is also a full fledged mail account and is the account that the department will use to send you important announcements, etc. You can use any POP or IMAP e-mail client to access or send departmental email. For these programs, the incoming mail server and outgoing mail (smtp) server are the same. Use "stat.wvu.edu" for both configuration fields. If you prefer to read email in a terminal session, please use "pine." Go to our Computing Support page for a brief tutorial on "pine."

How can I connect to the server and read e-mail from home?

With a Java enabled web-browser, go to http://stat.wvu.edu/mindterm , you may login and use Pine to read e-mail. For file transfers from home, see: Secure File Transfer Instructions

How do I post my personal web page online?

It is quite easy to put you personal web page online. Simply create a directory named "public_html" under your Unix account home directory and store your html files and images there. If you create one file named "index.html", it will appear as your main page at the web address:

http://www.stat.wvu.edu/~ your_user_name

Be sure to make all web accessible files/directories executable by using command "chmod 755 file_name."

What should I do if I cannot login?

If you have any problems accessing the Statistics Department servers, please send an email to Steve Giessler (steve.giessler@mail.wvu.edu) or Jun Tan (jtan@stat.wvu.edu).
